Found this while walking home, a fourth-generation Mitsubishi Delica, not sold in Canada. Found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! by the Globe and Mail which is nearly useless, yet slightly interesting on the fact that some provinces want to ban right-hand drive vehicles, such as the Delica.

I have a high view of Canada for their 15 year law, but how about cars that were around the same year? Are they any more safer than this? Would a 1990s neon be safer than a skyline? Would a shitbox K-Car be safer than a Nicely made JDM car? Regulators don't understand there are also crash regulations elsewhere and cars are actually being sold in other countries.

But the issue here seems to be more to do with visibility. To put it simply, driving on the right side of the road makes right-hand cars fairly dangerous. Stealing an example from Guy Delisle, imagine you’re on a two lane road behind a large vehicle. Now imagine trying to pass it safely. Visibility issues means that you wouldn’t be able to see if the lane was clean until your vehicle was already pretty deep into it, which is fairly dangerous.

Honestly, I think it’s a very valid point against the importation of certain vehicles. It also makes me wonder if this means that Quebec has inadvertently banned the right hand drive mail Jeeps people love so much.

See a lot of these in Australia, they look good when set up for off-roading.

Does one pronounce ‘Delica’ the same as ‘Celica’? I do and it dosent sound right.

Vancouver is crawling with these, even more of the previous generation. My friend and I used to joke that you weren't allowed to live in East Van unless you drove an L300 or a Mk4 Golf TDI

“Concerned by the rising number of right-hand-drive imports, ICBC analyzed crashes involving vehicles like the Delica. In 2009, the agency published its alarming findings: Right-hand-drive vehicles were 40 per cent more likely to be in a crash, and 56 per cent more likely to cause one, than left-hand-drive vehicles. The driver’s position is believed to make everyday manoeuvres – such as pulling away from a curb or making a left-hand turn – much more dangerous.”

The ICBC study was later proven to be false. Furthermore, the UK and Japan both have a significant population of LHD vehicles and you do not hear about people dying because of their “wrong-wheel drive” BMWs and Porshe 911s. (almost every country in the EU allows the registration of both RHD and LHD vehicles except for Lithuania.) The only reason desk-jockeys and bureaucrats *hate* imported cars is because they pose a competitive business threat. Japan is party to the UN agreement, hence all of their cars meet EU safety regulations, therefore their cars are widely regarded as being equivalent to or better than (in the case of headlights) cars made to FMVSS/CMVSS standards.

The ICBC study was later proven to be (mostly) false and they failed to ban RHD cars except for in Quebec. Bringing it up now is akin to talking about last year’s Super Bowl; not really relevant.

I just found the news article while looking up information on the car and thought it would be interesting to share. Do you have a link to the article proving it wrong, by the way? I’d love to read it.

Can confirm: Delicas are everywhere in B.C. They’re probably the single most common JDM model here. Either that or Hilux Surfs (4Runners).

I’m not sure this is a good place to make that argument. You crash a cabover Delica, you’re getting hurt.
